It was Cuba’s Golden Age. Her streets crowded with pleasure-seekers, Havana’s nightlife shed every restraint as the mambo and cha-cha came of age. Amidst music, pleasure, illegality, and excess, the nation underwent a dramatic change.
In March of 1952 an ex-army corporal stole the Cuban presidency. Preceded by a well-earned reputation for avarice and violence, he sold his favor to the highest bidder. Franchising Havana’s gambling industry to the Mafia, he plundered the treasury and lined his pockets through extortion, drug trafficking, and prostitution. Rewriting the Cuban Constitution to personal advantage, bribing judges and politicians, his crimes prompted the popular insurrection that quickly grew to a revolution.
This book tells that story. Told from within the eye of the storm, it is seen, heard, tasted, and felt from the perspective of six who lived it. They relate, in their words and through their eyes, the struggle they engaged, the losses they sustained, and the world, for better or worse, they ultimately brought about.
